A cutting-edge new musical about identity, sexuality, and what makes us who we are. This hour-long song-cycle weaves a path from cabaret artist Jessica Walker’s emotionally complex childhood right up to her very particular wedding day, with songs about early gender confusion, sexual assault, first love and betrayal, and family secrets. It is a powerful, personal story with universal themes, expressed through Atkins and Walker’s uncategorisable musical mix of humour, classicism, torch, and a touch of Eighties synth!
In 2021, amidst the gloom of another lockdown, I, as many others, sat down to write. My only plan was to come out from behind the safety net of other characters for the first (and possibly only) time. What Joe and I ended up writing left me feeling vulnerable and terrified, but also excited, because it was very different from anything we had created before.
As our theatres were closed, we chose to bring the resulting narrative to life on film, using animation. The film you are about to watch captures our very first performance.
At the heart of the piece is a deep emotional truth, if not always a factual one.
It’s not earth shattering
It doesn’t change a thing
It's a personal story
There is no blaze of glory….
